Jersey shore girl novel based primarily in Avalon, NJ. From an feature in the Seven Mile Times under the heading, "You can take the girl out of Avalon. . . ":
For novelist Meg Donohue, there has always been a kind of enchantment surrounding the Jersey shore. A San Francisco transplant for six years now, Donohue still takes every opportunity to head back to Avalon, where she spent her childhood summers. Her latest book, "All the Summer Girls," is inspired by, and based heavily in, the beautiful town Donohue describes as simply "magical."
"I've spent time in Avalon every summer since I was in the womb!" she says.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Donohue has lived most of her life along the East Coast. After studying at New Hampshire's Dartmouth College and New York's Columbia University, she has a deep familiarity with multiple localities, many of which find their way into her writing.
"With all of my writing so far, the parts of the story that are most grounded in autobiography for me are the places," she says. "I always set my characters in places that I know really well; I want it to feel very real."
"All the Summer Girls" features San Francisco, New York, and Philadelphia. But the most important place in the book is Avalon, where her three protagonists, best friends since childhood, spent their summers growing up. Avalon is also where a monumental night in the women's lives unfurled, one with consequences they've held on to well into their adult lives. According to Donohue, the book simply would not be the same if it were set anywhere else. It's this balance of reality and fantasy that allows the story to shine. And Donohue's memories and experiences were not only important to the setting-- they motivated her to write the story in the first place.
