1940 South Bend 9A 3' Metal Lathe W/Tooling~ Restoration Ready
Was going to restore this lathe till life got in the way.
Gathered some tooling, parts, manuals and lubricants.
Got the serial card from Grizzly (Grizzly owns South Bend now) and learned this lathe was originally purchased by Fleetwings Aircraft in 1940.
Neat history here; Fleetwings tried to produce aircraft for the WWII war effort and failed. I think they closed down in the early 60's.
Tooling included can be seen in the photos.
3 jaw chuck w/wrench and concave and convex jaws
4 jaw chuck w/wrench
Faceplate with one drive dog
Dead and live centers Lantern tool posts
Turret tool posts
Various HSS cutter stock, few this and thats...

New Driver Bits and spanner
New parts include
8 new bronze bushings
Full set of way wipers and lubrication wicks
Take-up bearing upgrade with instruction guide
Full set of fussy A-B-C oils and way oil
2 bottles of Back Gear lubricant
New really nice data plate
Lathe features threading gauge and reversing switch. cool work light.
Tail stock has taper adjustments. Carriage stop appears to be shop made.
The dauber is naturally missing. IYKYK. (great first project, lol)
Gear train is in awesome shape. Everything that moves in preserved in a layer of grease and oils.
Cross slide has some backlash and should be fitted with new cross slide nuts.
Everything on the apron functions. Leather drive belt is in good shape and works fine but should be replaced.
The bed ways appear to be in fantastic shape. Naturally for its age there is some wear.
I didn't get that far to measure it. You can still see some of the hand scraping marks.
The lathe is mounted on a shop made aluminum tray table with riser blocks and wooden shelving at the bottom.
Heavy. Naturally.
I can load it with 2 guys on a low trailer or low pickup with a chain fall and heavy straps.
Questions welcome and encouraged. I can only tell you what I know.
